Japan Disaster Appeal

The Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Japan Club of Sydney and the Japanese Society of Sydney need your help!

We are deeply saddened by the terrible loss of life and large numbers of missing persons resulting from the catastrophic earthquake which struck on March 11, in the Pacific Ocean off Japan’s northeast coast. As well as expressing our sincere condolences to the family and friends of those payed the ultimate sacrifice and lost their lives, we would like to offer our heartfelt sympathy to those affected by the disaster, and their family and friends.

In the face of a disaster of such magnitude, the Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Japan Club of Sydney and the Japanese Society of Sydney, will be working in close association with the Consulate-General of Japan in Sydney to give disaster relief efforts a helping hand from Japanese nationals abroad. Fundraising and various other activities will be carried out to support victims of the disaster and the reconstruction of affected areas as listed below, in which we would greatly appreciate your generous support and cooperation.

Fundraising

Donations are kindly requested by either direct deposit, cheque, or in cash to a donation box. Your contributions will be sent to the Japanese Red Cross through the bank account below, set up by the Consulate-General of Japan in Sydney. Subject to the situation in Japan, donation is scheduled to continue until late April. Please be aware the Consulate-General is presently unable to issue receipts required to claim a tax deduction on donations. Should you require this, we request that you kindly donate directly to the Australian Red Cross. Otherwise, donations will be gratefully accepted as follows:

Donation Boxes:

Donation boxes will be placed in the offices of the Consulate-General of Japan in Sydney, the Japanese Society of Sydney and the Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry as a matter of course. Additionally, they will be at Kinokuniya, Japanese restaurants, food retailers and hair salons, and other participating partners. Please make use of them next time you visit, and don’t hesitate to contact us (details below) should you know of any group or business who may be interested in supporting our disaster appeal with a donation box.

The Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Japan Club of Sydney and the Japanese Society of Sydney have obtained authority to fundraise from the NSW Office of Liquor, Gaming and Racing. Strict regulations accompany this however, and we ask for your cooperation and understanding in this matter. Further details will be provided along with a donation kit.

Charity Events

We hope to see active participation in charity events, which will be announced via the Consulate-General of Japan in Sydney’s website and other media.
